IB Spanish B · Human Ingenuity

Human Ingenuity sounds vague. Here is what IB Spanish B really asks you to say.

Ingenio humano is the theme most students answer with a few vague lines about technology. It asks one precise question, and once you see it, every task on this theme gets easier.

Ask ten IB Spanish B students what Ingenio humano means and you will get ten vague answers about technology. The theme is not vague. It asks one question: how do people create, invent and communicate, and what does that change in society? Keep that question in your head and every text, listening and oral task on this theme has a clear angle.

1. Know where the theme sits in the course

IB Language B is built around five themes: Identities, Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organisation and Sharing the Planet. Every task you meet belongs to one of them.

  • Paper 1: you choose one writing task and write it in the right text type (250 to 400 words at SL, 450 to 600 at HL).
  • Paper 2: reading and listening comprehension of authentic texts.
  • Individual Oral: about 12 to 15 minutes, starting from a stimulus and moving into a conversation.

Always check the current subject guide for the exact timings and weightings of your level.

2. Learn the five areas the theme covers

The guide suggests entertainment, artistic expressions, communication and media, technology, and scientific innovation. For each one, prepare one real example you can talk about in Spanish: a series you watched, an artist you follow, an app you use, a discovery you read about. Real examples make your ideas sound specific, and specific is what examiners reward.

The question is never “do I know this topic?” but “can I give an opinion about it, with a reason and an example?”

3. Build vocabulary around ideas, not word lists

Instead of a list of 50 technology words, build small sets you can use in any task:

  • Advantages and risks: facilitar, ahorrar tiempo, depender de, la brecha digital.
  • Cause and effect: gracias a, debido a, lo cual provoca.
  • Opinion with a reason: en mi opinión, lo que más me preocupa es, a pesar de que.

4. Practise the three tasks this theme loves

  • Paper 1: an article, a blog post or a speech about the impact of a technology. Choose the text type before the ideas.
  • Paper 2: read and listen for the writer’s position, not only for facts.
  • Oral: describe an image for one minute, link it to the theme, then answer “why?” to your own statements.

5. Common mistakes

  • Writing a list of gadgets instead of a point of view.
  • Using only positive or only negative arguments, with no balance.
  • Repeating the same three connectors in every text.
  • Memorising a speech and losing the thread when the examiner asks a follow-up question.

6. A 60-second self-test

  1. Can I explain the theme’s question in one sentence?
  2. Do I have one real example for each of the five areas?
  3. Can I defend an opinion about technology for one minute, in Spanish?
  4. Do I know which text type I would use for an opinion, a report and a speech?
  5. Can I give both a benefit and a risk without thinking?

If you are a parent, ask your child to explain the theme to you in Spanish for one minute. If they can, they are on track. And if you teach this theme for the first time, the same order works: question first, examples second, vocabulary third.
